Toxicity testing of newly synthesized xanthene-3-ones after parenteral applications: an experimental study in rats (Rattus norvegicus)

Abstract

Xanthenes are organic compounds that can be of natural, semi-synthetic and synthetic origin. Many studies indicate that xanthene and its derivatives have antibacterial, antifungal, anthelmintic, antiprotozoal, anticancer and antidiabetic properties. In this study, the toxic effects of two newly synthesized xanthene compounds, 2,6,7-trihydroxy-9-(2-hydroxy-5-bromophenyl)- 3H-xanthene-3-one (COMPOUND 1) and 2,6,7-trihydroxy-9-(3-bromophenyl)-3H-xanthene-3-one (COMPOUND 2), were investigated in rats, Wistar strain. The compounds were administered by intramuscular and subcutaneous injections of 1 mL(0,156 mg/mL) once-daily for seven and 14 days, respectively. Histopathological analysis of selected parenchymatous organs revealed no changes indicating toxic effects, therefore, further studies on the subacute and chronic toxicity as well as potential pharmacological effects are required.
